Plain-English point
We analysed 150,000+ AI citations: Facebook, Instagram and Threads were about 0.2 percent, with no reliable lift in brand mentions. How to check your brand.
Best use
Use this article when you are working on citation strategy and need a concrete GEO next step.
TL;DR: We looked at more than 150,000 AI citations across tracked brands in Mettle. Facebook, Instagram and Threads together were about 0.2 percent of them, and citing them did not reliably lift brand mentions. So check whether social matters for your brand before you plan around it. Mettle social listening does that check, audits drafts before you post, and ties each post to the visits it brings.
Posting without knowing if it matters
Most teams post because social is where they are expected to be. Very few can say whether AI assistants use those posts when they answer a question about the brand.
The two things are different. A post can get likes and still never show up in an AI answer. A forum thread or a review site can shape the answer without your brand ever posting there.
Social listening in Mettle starts from that gap. It looks at what AI answers already cite for your tracked prompts, and only then asks you to do anything about social.
What our own data shows
Mettle stores the citations behind every AI answer it tracks. We counted them: more than 150,000 citations across dozens of tracked brands, plus a deeper look at the brand with the most data, about 79,000 citations over eight months from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Brand names and prompts are not shown.
Facebook, Instagram and Threads together were about 0.2 percent of the citations behind AI answers. Instagram and Threads were almost never cited.
| Network | Share of all citations | In the deep-dive brand |
|---|---|---|
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads) | 0.2% | 0.3%, all Facebook |
| 1.3% | 2.4% | |
| 1.1% | 0.8% | |
| YouTube | 1.0% | 0.5% |
Three things stand out.
- In our data, only one provider cites Meta. Gemini cited Facebook pages. ChatGPT and Perplexity cited none in our sample. Other studies do see some Perplexity citations, so read this as a pattern in our data rather than a rule.
- The social surface that does show up is different. In ChatGPT answers for the deep-dive brand, about one citation in five was LinkedIn.
- A raw comparison flatters social. Responses that cited Facebook mentioned the brand 99 percent of the time, against 46 percent without. That looks like a lift. It is a prompt effect: the Facebook citations sat in a small set of prompts where the brand shows up anyway, 86 percent of the time even without one. Compared within the same prompt on the same provider, the gap fell to under three percentage points, and LinkedIn, Reddit and YouTube showed no reliable lift either.
The practical reading: social profiles are worth keeping accurate, and a post can bring visits you can measure. But in this data it was not a reliable lever on whether AI assistants mention you. That is why the first step below is to check your own brand.
Other studies agree
Other studies you can find online measured the same thing on different samples, and the broad picture matches ours. Most are published by AI-visibility vendors and count differently, so compare the pattern, not the exact percentages.
- Meta is a sliver. One analysis of more than 100 million citations put Facebook at about 5% and Instagram at about 2% of social citations, with Threads near zero, and social and video together at roughly 5% of all citations.
- Facebook out-cites Instagram, and ChatGPT cites Meta least. A panel of about 300,000 answers measured Facebook at under one citation per 100 answers and Instagram at about half that, with ChatGPT close to zero for Instagram. Unlike our data, it also saw Facebook and Instagram cited by Perplexity, so the split by provider is not settled.
- What does get cited is mostly about people and news. A study that removed questions about using the platforms found Instagram citations in ChatGPT mostly answered questions about specific people, and Facebook's about people and live news.
- LinkedIn stands out for professional questions. Several studies report it as one of the most cited social sources in ChatGPT, and as the most cited domain for professional queries.
Where we differ: our deep-dive brand and the tracked brands overall cite social less than these studies suggest, and LinkedIn ranks above Reddit and YouTube in our data. Our prompts are brand-specific and mostly professional, which would explain both.

Step 1: check whether social matters at all
Before you plan a posting calendar, open the Does social matter for this brand? card.
It counts how often AI answers cite Facebook, Instagram and Threads for the prompts you track, then compares that with other networks such as Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. You get a plain verdict and a recommendation.
Honest answers
If the verdict is low, the card says so and points at where AI answers do look instead. That is a useful result. It saves you from a content plan that was never going to move your visibility.
This card needs no connection to any social account. It reads data Mettle already has.
Step 2: audit a draft before it goes out
Paste a draft into the AI-visibility content audit, pick the network, and optionally add the question the post should help you appear for.
The audit checks whether the draft:
- names your brand clearly and consistently
- links to your own site, and whether that link is tagged
- makes claims without a number or a source behind them
- names something concrete you offer
- opens with the answer instead of a warm-up
- covers the question you gave it
- fits the length and style of the network
It does not rewrite your post. It returns a score and an ordered list of fixes. Your own assistant, which knows your brand, does the rewriting.
What goes into a link
A tracked link is an ordinary link with a name tag on it. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics can tell which network, which action item and which post sent them.
Try it
Build a tracked link
Change any field and watch the link rebuild. Existing tags on your address are replaced, and each post gets its own short id so two posts to the same page stay separate.
| Part | Where it comes from | Shows up in Google Analytics as |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | The network you pick | Session source |
| utm_medium | Always social (newsletter for newsletters) | Session medium |
| utm_campaign | Your action item, so every post for it adds up together | Session campaign |
| utm_content | Your post label plus the link id, so each post stays separate | Session manual ad content |
The four tags are the standard UTM parameters Google Analytics already understands. Mettle fills them in consistently so that your reports do not split into Threads, threads and THREADS.
What happens after you create it
- Mettle builds the link and remembers it, so it can find it again.
- You post it wherever you normally post. Mettle never publishes for you.
- A visitor clicks. Google Analytics files the visit under the values in the link.
- Mettle reads the numbers back from the Google Analytics property connected to your brand and matches them to each link.
- You compare. Next to each link you see how your AI mention rate looked before and after it was created.
That last comparison is a correlation. Many things move an AI mention rate, and a link is one of them at most.
Step 3: connect your accounts, read-only
On Pro you can connect your Facebook Page, Instagram and Threads accounts. The connection asks for read permissions only. Mettle cannot post, comment or message from your accounts, and you can disconnect at any time.
Once connected you get three more things.
Insights beside AI mentions. Reach, views, engagement and follower change from your accounts, plotted against your daily AI mention rate with the correlation and the number of days behind it. If there are too few overlapping days, Mettle says so instead of printing a number.
Questions people actually ask. Mettle searches public Threads posts for how people phrase questions in your category, groups similar ones, and flags the ones that mention a competitor or that you already track. Good candidates can be added to a campaign as tracked prompts.
A profile consistency audit. AI systems read Facebook Pages and Instagram bios as sources about who you are. The audit compares name, website, description, services and location on those profiles with what your brand profile and site say, and lists concrete fixes.
Use it from your assistant
Everything above is available over MCP, so ChatGPT or Claude can do the checking while you stay in the conversation.
Use Mettle to check whether social media matters for [brand].
If it does, audit this draft for Threads and give me a tracked link for the pricing page:
[paste draft]
The assistant gets the verdict, the audit and the link in one pass, and you decide what to publish.
What Mettle deliberately does not do
- It does not post for you. Plenty of tools schedule and publish. Mettle tells you whether to bother and what happened afterwards.
- It does not claim cause. Visits and key events are counted. Mention-rate changes are shown next to them, labelled as correlation.
- It does not keep who said what. Questions mined from public posts are stored as grouped, anonymised wording with counts. Usernames and links to individual posts are not kept.
- It never sees your password. Connections use each network's own sign-in screen and ask only for read access.
Where to start
- Open Social listening in the sidebar and read the first card.
- If the verdict is medium or high, audit the next post you were going to publish.
- Tag its link, post it, and come back in a few days to read the numbers.
- If you are on Pro, connect Threads and see what people in your category are asking.

Questions this article answers
How often do AI answers cite Facebook, Instagram or Threads?
Rarely. In Mettle data covering more than 150,000 citations across dozens of tracked brands, Facebook, Instagram and Threads together were about 0.2 percent of citations. Almost all of it was Facebook, and in our data only Gemini cited it. Instagram and Threads were close to zero. Independent studies find the same order of magnitude.
If an AI answer cites a Facebook page, is the brand more likely to be mentioned?
Not reliably. Responses that cited Facebook mentioned the brand far more often on the surface, but those were prompts where the brand appears anyway. Comparing responses to the same prompt on the same provider, the difference was under three percentage points and not conclusive.
Does Mettle post to social media for me?
No. Mettle never publishes. It tells you whether social matters for your brand, checks a draft before you post, tags the link, and shows what the post brought back.
Do I need to connect Facebook, Instagram or Threads?
Not for the relevance check, the content audit or tracked links. Connecting your accounts adds insights next to your AI mention rate, questions people ask on Threads, and a profile consistency audit. Connections are read-only and can be removed at any time.
Can a tracked link prove a post improved my AI visibility?
No. Mettle shows the visits and key events a link brought and how your AI mention rate moved around it. That is a correlation to review, not proof of cause.
What do I need for tracked links to show traffic?
The destination must be on a site that sends data to the Google Analytics property connected to your Mettle brand. Without that connection you still get the link, but not the numbers.
