TL;DR: Most GEO and AI visibility tools do the same core job: run prompts, record answers, report mentions and citations. They differ in engine coverage, prompt limits, whether they tell you what to do next, and price. Choose by those four criteria, not by dashboard screenshots. We are the publisher of one of these tools, so we say where each option fits, including when it is not us.

Warning:

Disclosure: MettleGEO is our product. We have tried to keep this fair, but you should treat any vendor-written comparison, including this one, with some skepticism. The prices below were checked in October 2026. Plans, limits and engine add-ons change often, so confirm on each vendor's own page before you buy.

What a GEO monitoring tool should actually do

Strip away the marketing and a useful tool does five things:

  1. Runs your prompts on a schedule across several AI engines.
  2. Stores the full answers, not only scores.
  3. Extracts brands and citations so you see who is mentioned and who is cited.
  4. Aggregates over repeated runs, because AI answers rarely repeat exactly.
  5. Points to what to fix, ideally with a draft.

Tools that stop at step 3 give you a score. Tools that reach step 5 give you a to-do list.

The comparison criteria that matter

CriterionWhy it matters
Engine coverageDifferent engines cite different sources, and overlap with Google's top 10 varies a lot by engine
Prompt and run limitsToo few prompts or runs gives noisy numbers
Citation-level dataMentions alone do not tell you which sources to pursue
Search Console linkLets you start from queries you already have demand for
Action layerWhether findings turn into drafts, fixes or tickets
Fit and priceAn enterprise suite is wasted on a five-person team

How the main options differ

Prices were checked against each vendor's published pricing in October 2026. Positioning draws on 2026 roundups from Zapier, Cognizo and others.

If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, the add-on is the lowest-friction start. If you only need to watch a handful of prompts, a lightweight tool is plenty. Compare on what you will actually run: a low entry price can cover only some engines or a small prompt count, and the plan you need is often one or two tiers up.

Where MettleGEO fits

MettleGEO is a European (Sofia-based) platform built around closing the loop from tracking to action:

  • Tracking: prompt sets run across OpenAI, Gemini and Perplexity, with mention rate, sentiment, share of voice and a classified list of cited domains.
  • Search Console cross-reference: queries with impressions but no AI citation are flagged as the first fixes.
  • GEO health audit: a scored audit across technical SEO, content quality, authority, freshness and user signals, with fix templates.
  • Action plan and drafts: gaps become draft items such as pages, FAQs and outreach.
  • AI access checks and one-click fixes: it detects whether AI crawlers can reach your site, prepares reversible fixes, and works on the free Cloudflare plan.
  • MCP connector: use all of it from ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code or Codex. See using Mettle from your AI assistant.

Where it may not be the right pick: if you need very large prompt volumes across many engines for a global enterprise with a dedicated analyst team, a dedicated enterprise suite may fit better. If you only want a single number on a dashboard, a lightweight tool is simpler.

A five-question buying checklist

  1. Which engines do my buyers use? Cover those, not all of them.
  2. How many prompts do I need for statistical comfort? Roughly 20 to 30 per campaign is a workable start.
  3. Can I see the raw answers and cited URLs? If not, you cannot audit the score.
  4. Does it connect to Search Console? This saves weeks of prompt writing.
  5. What happens after the insight? Ask to see an example of a finding turned into an action.

Run a two-week trial on your own brand

Pick one tool, load 10 real buyer prompts, and judge it on whether it surfaced one concrete action you would not have found by hand. That is a better test than any feature matrix.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a paid tool at all? For a handful of prompts, you can query the engines manually and log results. It stops scaling quickly because of answer variability. We cover that in replacing the spreadsheet.

Are these tools accurate? They measure what the engines return to API-style queries, which can differ from what a logged-in user sees. Use them for trends and gaps, not for exact absolute numbers.

Will tracking improve my visibility? No. Tracking shows you where you stand. Improvement comes from what you change afterwards, such as the citation gap work.

Questions this article answers

What should a GEO monitoring tool do?

Run your prompts on a schedule across several AI engines, store full answers, extract brands and citations, aggregate over repeated runs, and point to what to fix.

Which GEO tool is cheapest?

As of October 2026, Otterly.ai is the lowest-cost dedicated option at about $29 per month for 15 prompts, but its entry price covers four engines and extra engines cost more. Peec AI starts around $95 per month and Profound around $99 with limits. The Semrush and Ahrefs add-ons, roughly $99 per domain and $199 per platform, are the easiest start if you already pay for those suites. Prices change, so confirm on each vendor page.

Do I need a paid tool at all?

For a handful of prompts you can track manually in a spreadsheet. Because AI answers vary between runs, manual tracking stops scaling quickly.
