Plain-English point

A six-step method for tracking ChatGPT citations and brand mentions: build a buyer-language prompt set, run it repeatedly, store full answers, classify cited domains, and turn the gaps into content and outreach.

Best use

Use this article when you are working on citation strategy and need a concrete GEO next step.

ChatGPT brand citation tracking ChatGPT citation monitoring how to find which sites ChatGPT cites about my brand track brand mentions in ChatGPT AI citation tracking

**TL;DR:** To track which sites ChatGPT cites about your brand, run a fixed set of buyer-style prompts on a schedule, record every answer, and log three things per run: whether your brand was mentioned, which domains were cited, and which competitors appeared. Do it across several runs, because a single answer tells you almost nothing. Then close the gaps where the same third-party domains keep winning.

## Why "what does ChatGPT say about us?" is the wrong question

Most teams start by typing their brand name into ChatGPT and screenshotting the result. That answers one question, once, with one phrasing, in one session.

Citation tracking asks something different: **across the questions your buyers actually ask, which sources does ChatGPT lean on, and are we one of them?**

Those are two separate problems:

- **Mention:** your brand name appears in the answer text.
- **Citation:** your domain appears as a linked source behind the answer.

You can be mentioned without being cited (the model repeats your name from a third-party article), and cited without being mentioned (your page supplied a fact, but the answer named a competitor). Tracking only one gives you a distorted picture.

## What we know about how ChatGPT picks sources

The evidence base is still young and much of it is vendor-run, so treat exact percentages as directional. A few findings are consistent enough to plan around:

- **Citations mostly come through web search, not memory.** An [Ahrefs analysis of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts](https://ahrefs.com/de/blog/why-chatgpt-cites-pages/) found most cited URLs arrive through the general search channel rather than from community or video sources.
- **Ranking in Google is not the same as being cited.** [Ahrefs found](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/) that only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot ranked in Google's top 10 for the original prompt. Perplexity was the outlier, at roughly 29%.
- **Reading is not citing.** Log studies of ChatGPT's research mode, such as [Peec's read vs cited analysis](https://docs.peec.ai/research/read-vs-cited-in-deep-research), show it fetches many more pages than it ends up citing. Getting crawled is necessary, not sufficient.
- **Extractable beats merely authoritative.** Practitioner analyses keep pointing to the same traits in cited pages: a direct answer near the top, clear structure, concrete numbers, and recent dates.

What this means for tracking

Because the citation set shifts between runs and differs from Google rankings, your Google rank report cannot stand in for an AI citation report. You need to observe the answers themselves.

## The 6-step tracking method

### 1\. Build a prompt set from real buyer language

Start with 20 to 30 prompts across four types:

| Type | Example |
| --- | --- |
| Category | "What are the best tools for tracking brand mentions in AI search?" |
| Comparison | "Compare the top platforms for tracking AI citations" |
| Problem-aware | "How do I find which sites ChatGPT cites about my brand?" |
| Local / segment | "B2B SaaS platforms in Europe that track AI visibility" |

Mine the phrasing from Google Search Console queries, sales calls and support tickets. Long, conversational queries are where AI answers appear, so use them as written.

### 2\. Run each prompt repeatedly, not once

AI answers are not deterministic. A [SparkToro study of nearly 3,000 prompts](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ai-recommendations-change-with-nearly-every-query-sparktoro/566242) found that brand lists almost never repeat exactly across runs, although some brands appeared again and again even as their position shuffled.

The practical takeaway: **measure appearance rate, not rank.** "We appeared in 7 of 20 runs" is a stable metric. "We were third" is not.

### 3\. Record the full answer, not a summary

For every run, store:

- The provider and the date
- The complete answer text
- Every cited domain and URL
- Every brand named, yours and competitors'
- Sentiment of the brand mention

You will want the raw text later, when you ask why a competitor keeps winning.

### 4\. Classify the cited domains by role

A list of domains is noise until you group it. Typical roles:

- Review aggregators (G2, Capterra)
- Editorial and "best of" listicles
- Community threads (Reddit, forums)
- Vendor pages and documentation
- Research and benchmark reports

If 60% of citations for a category query come from listicles and you have never been on one, that is your content plan.

### 5\. Compare your pages against the winners

For each high-value prompt, open the cited sources and note what they do that you do not: a comparison table, a definition in the first paragraph, original data, a named author, a date.

### 6\. Repeat on a schedule and watch the trend

One snapshot is a baseline. The value is in the weekly or monthly line: mention rate, citation count, and number of distinct cited domains. Changes after you publish or earn a new third-party mention are your feedback loop.

Warning:

Be careful with small samples. If a prompt has been run only three times, a 0% mention rate means "unknown", not "invisible". Wait for enough runs before drawing a conclusion.

## What to do with the data

Three actions cover most cases:

1. **Fill gaps where competitors are cited and you are not.** Build the page type that is being rewarded: usually a comparison, a definition or a data-backed guide. Our [citation gap strategy](/blog/citation-gap-strategy) walks through a six-week version of this.
2. **Get onto the third-party sources that models already trust.** If the same review sites and lists appear run after run, that is where your presence needs to be.
3. **Make your own pages easier to quote.** Question-style headings, a two to three sentence direct answer, and [structured data](/blog/schema-markup-for-ai).

AvoidWe published 12 thought-leadership posts and our ChatGPT visibility did not move.

PreferWe found 5 prompts where listicles drive citations, earned inclusion on 2 of them, and published a comparison page. Mention rate on those prompts went from 0 of 10 runs to 4 of 10.

## Doing this with Mettle

Mettle runs your prompt sets across ChatGPT-style (OpenAI), Gemini and Perplexity providers on a schedule, stores every response, and rolls it up into mention rate, sentiment, share of voice and a list of cited domains with industry classification. The citation list shows who is shaping the answers in your category, and the action plan turns the gaps into concrete drafts.

You can also ask for this from inside your AI assistant through the [Mettle MCP connector](/blog/use-mettle-from-chatgpt-claude-mcp): "Which domains are cited for my brand's prompts, and where am I missing?"

If you are starting from zero, set up one campaign with 10 prompts, let it run for two weeks, and read the citation list before you write anything.

## Questions this article answers

What is the difference between a mention and a citation in ChatGPT?

A mention is your brand name appearing in the answer text. A citation is your domain appearing as a linked source behind the answer. You can be mentioned without being cited and cited without being mentioned, so both need tracking.

How many times should I run each prompt?

Several times. AI answers are not deterministic and brand lists rarely repeat exactly, so measure the share of runs in which your brand appears rather than a single answer or rank position.

Does ranking in Google guarantee a ChatGPT citation?

No. Ahrefs found only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot ranked in Google's top 10 for the original prompt, so rank reports cannot replace direct tracking of AI answers.

How can Mettle track ChatGPT citations?

Mettle runs your prompt sets on a schedule across OpenAI, Gemini and Perplexity, stores every response, and reports mention rate, sentiment, share of voice and a classified list of cited domains.
